Minister visits site of 61 new Killarney houses
‘ONE of Ireland’s largest sustainable social housing developments is currently being developed in Killarney and it is due for completion in early 2020.
Housing Minister, Eoghan Murphy, yesterday visited the site of the Sruthán na Sailí development in Derreen, which is a project being undertaken by Clúid Housing, in partnership with Kerry County Council, Rebuilding Ireland and Kerry-based low energy building system manufacturer Thermohouse Limited.
The Derreen development, which commenced in January 2019, consists of 61 two and three-bed dwellings built using a low energy building system which makes it up to 60 per cent faster than traditional construction methods.
Michael Cronin, Managing Director of Thermohouse said Clúid’s development at Derreen illustrates the benefits of the complete low energy building system comprising of interlocking walls, floors and roofs modules.
“Manufactured off-site at our Killarney factory, these future-proofed homes are faster to construct, more energy efficient and benefit from a 60-year system guarantee,” he said.
While in Kerry, Minister Murphy also performed the official opening of 33 new local authority social housing units in Kenmare where a 22-unit scheme at Ard Bhearna, Gortamullin, Kenmare has been provided.
The €4.25 million Kerry County Council scheme provides two and three bedroom homes constructed by Kenmare Plant Hire Ltd.
The minister also took time to visit 11 new homes at Croílár na Mistéalach in Tralee which are part of a larger €4.6m development and which form part of the wider Mitchels-Boherbee Community Regeneration Project.
Minister Murphy was also given a tour of the 21 new homes at An Dún, Killeen, Tralee, being constructed by Ned O’Shea and Sons Ltd on behalf of the local authority, for the elderly and people with disabilities in particular at a cost of €3.8 million.
Mayor of Kerry Cllr Niall Kelleher, remarked: “Those who will come to live in these houses will make them their homes and I hope that the new residents will be very happy and comfortable. I warmly welcome the further progression of Kerry County Council’s housing programme and the 115 new homes – some of which are being developed in partnership with Clúid Housing – are of tremendous benefit in meeting the housing need in many parts of Kerry”.
Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, said the housing programme in Kerry has very clear targets and has put the necessary funding streams in place to provide homes for those in need of accommodation across the county.’
